Special Services

Counseling

In Northfield Public Schools, school social workers serve as the link between home, school and community. School psychologists use their training and skills to collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment. School counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented to today’s diverse student population.

English Language Learners (ELL)

Students who have limited English proficiency, because English is not their primary language, may be eligible for individualized instructional services.

Non-traditional High School

The Northfield Public Schools Area Learning Center provides a positive, safe and structured learning environment with block scheduling, independent study, a Teen Parenting Program and dual enrollment.

Section 504: Supporting Disabilities

Section 504 requires that reasonable accommodations be made for individuals with disabilities within the regular classroom setting. Accommodations are modifications made by classroom teacher(s) and other school staff to help individual students benefit from their program of education.

Special Education

The Northfield Public Schools is committed to the success of all students and takes seriously its mandate to provide a “free and appropriate public education” (FAPE) to students with disabilities.

Summer Classes/Targeted Services

The mission of Targeted Services is the intervention and prevention of school dropout. Services are designed to help students to be successful and to remain in traditional school. Targeted Services programming for students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade occurs on an extended day/extended year basis.

Title I: Supplemental Instruction

Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides funding to school districts to provide supplemental instruction to students who are at risk for not reaching grade-level standards in reading and mathematics. Funding is targeted exclusively to those buildings with poverty rates greater than the district as a whole, based on the percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. A portion of the district’s Title I funding flows to non-public schools located within the geographic boundaries of the district, regardless of their student poverty rate.
