Early Childhood Screening

Community Services_Screening 1One of the milestones of a child’s development is early childhood screening, a free service provided by Northfield Public Schools. *The State of Minnesota requires that all children attending kindergarten in a public school complete a screening. Ideally, children should be screened as soon as possible after their third birthday in order to identify potential health and development concerns.

The screening tool the district uses is designed for the specific age of the child. Vision, hearing, growth, immunization status, and development will all be checked by well-qualified, trained staff.

Screenings are held at Longfellow School, located at 201 Orchard St. S. Call 507.645.1200 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to schedule a screening or for more information.

Make a screening appointment if:

  • You are new to the district.
  • Your child is 3 years old and has not been screened.
  • You have concerns about a child who is younger than 3 years old.
  • Your child is entering kindergarten in the fall and has not been screened.

Early childhood developmental screening helps a school district identify children who may benefit from district and community resources available to help in their development. Early childhood developmental screening includes a vision screening that helps detect potential eye problems but is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.
